How to Save on the Routine Expenses That Come with Driving a Car

Driving a car is expensive! While public transportation doesn’t work for everyone, it certainly can be tempting whenever you’re faced with an unexpected repair or a forgotten insurance payment that’s suddenly due. Budgeting for these expenses isn’t always easy, especially if you need the money to pay your other bills.

There are a few things you can do to make paying for routine car care and expenses a little less painful. Try these tips, and if you have any of your own, leave them in the comments on our Facebook page!

Get a Buddy. Specifically, GasBuddy! This is an app that you can use to find the cheapest gas in your area. According to their website, they can save you up to $0.30 per gallon, which can really add up. It doesn’t cost anything, and it only takes a minute to check the app when you see you’re running low on gas.

Insurance Discounts. When is the last time you called your car insurance company and asked about your rate? Certain companies will offer good driving discounts, or they may have a device they can send you that tracks your driving and usage and offers discounts based on the results. It’s worth a phone call to see what they are able to do for you!

Pay a Little More and Save. If you’re still making payments on your car, consider paying a little bit more on top of your monthly payment. If you rounded your payment up to the nearest $50, that could mean thousands in savings over the term of your loan. If your lender allows additional payments, split your monthly payment in half and pay that amount every two weeks. At the end of the year, you’ll have made 26 half-payments … or 13 full payments instead of 12. You probably won’t even notice, and you’ll pay off your loan a lot faster.

Finance Your New Tires. When you choose Acima Credit to finance your new set of tires, you can spread your payments out over a 12-month period and schedule your payment due date to align with your payday. We also offer an early payoff discount of 25% for paying your balance in 90 days or fewer. If you have other expenses that are more urgent, the early payoff discount will give you three months to pay for the tires, which is a lot easier than trying to come up with the money on the spot.
